Lion to Release "Smile 40 Mediclear"
Shown to Work Well against Itchy, Bloodshot Eyes and to Prevent Various Ocular Diseases
—Helps Age-Related Decline of Lysozyme in Tears—
Lion Corporation (President Sadayoshi Fujishige) announces the release of Smile 40 Mediclear eyedrops to be sold at drugstores and pharmacies nationwide beginning August 7, 2007. The new addition to the Smile 40 lineup has shown to be effective in preventing itchy eyes, bloodshot eyes and various ocular diseases. Smile 40 Mediclear contains the highest allowable dose of lysozyme hydrochloride*1, a key ingredient that works to help the function of lysozyme, which is found in tears. The eye’s production of lysozyme has been found to decline progressively with age.

1. Objective of Introducing the New Product
Lysozyme is an enzyme that is naturally abundant in tears and plays an important role in maintaining healthy eyes, owing to its anti-inflammatory and bacteriolytic functions. With age, however, lysozyme amounts tend to decline. Although itchiness and redness come from inflammation, one of the reasons for inflammation of the eyes in older people is believed to be reduced amounts of lysozyme, which leads to a loss of essential ocular defense capabilities and corneal damage.

According to a Lion survey of middle-aged and older people, a large number of respondents reported experiencing itchy and bloodshot eyes throughout the year, and they recognize that the major causes of these problems are aging and the deterioration of the eye’s capabilities. We also discovered that many of the respondents who reported occurrences of inflammation were highly likely to be concerned with finding ways of preventing eye problems (2006 Lion Survey).

Based on these findings, Lion has created Smile 40 Mediclear, a compound of vitamin A, an essential vitamin for the maintenance of visual function, and lysozyme hydrochloride, which helps boost the functioning of natural lysozyme (a tear fluid component that declines with age) in the eyes, effectively preventing various eye problems, including bloodshot, itchy eyes and various ocular diseases.

2. Product features
(1) Contains the highest allowable dosage of lysozyme hydrochloride*1, a key ingredient that works to help the function of lysozyme, a tear fluid component that declines with age

(i) Proven effectiveness for itchy and bloodshot eyes by reducing inflammation
In addition to lysozyme hydrochloride, an excellent anti-inflammatory agent, Smile 40 Mediclear also contains the antihistamine, chlorpheniramine maleate, to work against itchiness, and a tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride component to prevent the redness of bloodshot eyes. Together, these components can prevent inflammation to improve eye conditions such as itchiness and bloodshot eyes.

(ii) Helps normalize the function of tears to prevent ocular diseasesLysozyme
hydrochloride protects the eyes from dust and bacteria to prevent ocular diseases.
(2) Contains vitamin A, which aids visual function*2
(3) Refreshing feeling upon application

*2 Vitamin A compound technology

Vitamin A is essential to the preservation of healthy eyes and can be found in foods such as cheese and liver in large amounts. A lack of vitamin A is said to reduce the eye’s sensitivity to light.

In 1994, Lion established its vitamin A compound stabilizing technology that made it possible to infuse eyedrops with vitamin A, which had previously been difficult to do owing to vitamin A’s tendency to decompose easily.

Lion’s Smile 40 Series eyedrops (over-the-counter eyedrops) are the only eyedrops in Japan containing vitamin A.

By combining vitamin A with an antioxidant agent to prevent oxidative decomposition and thereafter inserting this into a surfactant aggregate (micelle), a now oily vitamin A can be placed stably into an aqueous eyedrop solution.
