Lion Participates in the United Nations Global Compact

Lion Corporation (President: Sadayoshi Fujishige) today announces its participation in the UN Global Compact in order to express to the global community its proactive efforts to achieve corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Circumstances behind Lion’s Participation in the UN Global Compact
Ever since the founding of the Company, Lion has expanded its business activities so as to improve the quality of people’s daily lives to a high degree, placing the highest value on maintaining customer satisfaction.

In January 2003, Lion established the Lion-Group Charter for Corporate Behavior to codify the overall policies and specific guidelines in relation to CSR it has implemented to date and further clarified its approach to activities in such areas as the provision of reliable and safe products and services as well as its environmental responsiveness by amending one portion of this document in January 2008. Furthermore, in October 2008 Lion formulated Basic Procurement Policies to clarify its position on procurement of items including raw material and finished product, which take into consideration environmental and social concerns. Amid rapidly increasing appeals by society for companies to take action in such areas as environmental issues, compliance and work-life balance, Lion announces today that it has decided to participate in the UN Global Compact in order to fully clarify its proactive efforts to realize its CSR initiatives on the international stage.

The UN Global Compact
Aiming to achieve sustainable growth, the UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative for companies and organizations that is composed of ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the protection of the environment and anti-corruption. Launched in 2000 owing to promotional efforts made by the previous Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, there are approximately 6,800 companies and organizations in around 130 countries worldwide (including 89 in Japan) participating in the UN Global Compact as of June 2009. The companies and organizations participating in the UN Global Compact are making ongoing efforts to realize the ten principles related to preserving human rights, eliminating unjust labor practices, protecting the environment and preventing corruption.

The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact
Human rights
Principle 1 Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2 make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour
Principle 3 Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4 the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5 the effective abolition of child labour; and
Principle 6 the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment
Principle 7 Businesses are asked to support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8 undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9 encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-corrupt ion
Principle 10 Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Hereafter, Lion is further reinforcing its CSR activities by undertaking initiatives Companywide in the areas of environmental preservation and social activities to create a sustainable society.
