Oral Health Class for Children
The Lion Group places emphasis on fostering children’s awareness of dental and oral health in order to help people stay healthy for a lifetime.
With the aim to teach correct oral care to elementary school students, the Lion Group has held the Oral Health Event of Tooth Brushing for Children since 1932. Started in Japan, the event is presently held in countries and regions across Asia.
As part of this event, in cooperation with the Lion Foundation for Dental Health, Lion Home Products (Taiwan) conducted an oral health class in two Japanese elementary schools in June 2017 (on June 26 at Kaohsiung Japanese School and June 28 at Taichung Japanese School).
The event featured programs arranged specifically for students in lower grades (Grade 1 to Grade 3) and higher grades (Grade 4 to Grade 6). *
Students from lower grades were taught about the “function of teeth and replacement of the baby teeth by adult teeth” and “the source of cavities (plaque)” in a 30-minute class. They were also taught tooth brushing techniques for their specific teeth alignment using hand mirrors and toothbrushes.
For students in higher grades, a model set of teeth was used to give individual instruction on how best to brush according to specific teeth alignment.
In total, 99 children from lower grades (45 from Kaohsiung Japanese School, 54 from Taichung Japanese School) and 71 children from higher grades (32 from Kaohsiung Japanese School, 39 from Taichung Japanese School) participated in the event and were taught correct oral care practices.
- The Japanese elementary school system lasts for 6 years, from Grade 1 to Grade 6.
