Status of Inclusion in SRI Indices

In addition to financial considerations, Lion works to address environmental, social and governance issues. Lion has been selected for inclusion in leading socially responsible investing (SRI) indices in and outside Japan, namely the FTSE4Good Global Index (based in the UK) and the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia/Pacific Index (U.S.A. and Switzerland).
We are also included in the ESG indices used by Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF): the FTSE Blossom Japan Index, MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN) and S&P/JPX Carbon Efficient Index. Inclusion in these indices indicates that Lion is recognized globally as a highly trustworthy company that meets high standards of corporate ethics and corporate social responsibility.

    Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific)

    A global ESG index jointly developed by U.S.-based S&P Dow Jones Indices and Switzerland-based RobecoSAM that selects companies with outstanding sustainability using economic, environmental and social criteria.
    Lion has been included in this index for four consecutive years beginning in 2017.

    An index developed by U.K.-based FTSE Russell that evaluates companies’ sustainability from ESG perspectives and selects companies that meet its standards.
    Lion has been included in this index for 13 consecutive years beginning in 2008.

    An index developed by U.K.-based FTSE Russell that selects Japanese companies with outstanding ESG performance.
    Lion has been included in this index for four consecutive years beginning in 2017.

  • MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN)

    MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN)

    An index developed by U.S.-based MSCI that selects for Japanese companies that promote the professional participation and advancement of woman and earn high gender diversity scores.
    Lion has been included in this index for four consecutive years beginning in 2017.

    S&P/JPX Carbon Efficient Index

    An index comprising the companies in the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) that weights said companies based on their disclosure of environmental data and carbon efficiency (carbon emissions per unit of net sales). Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) has used this index since 2018.
    Lion has been included in this index since its establishment in 2018.

    Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative

    Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative

    This collaborative international initiative was established in 2015 by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
    The initiative verified Lion’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target for 2030 as being based on sound scientific grounds and aligned with the target of limiting global warming to well below 2℃.

    Under this program, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi recognize enterprises engaging in outstanding efforts to promote health and productivity management.
    Lion has been selected under this program for four consecutive years, since its establishment in 2017.

    Most Valuable Company in Japan Grand Prix

    This award system is run by the Most Valuable Company in Japan Grand Prix Executive Committee of the Hito wo Taisetsu ni Suru Keiei Gakkai and the Hosei University Small and Medium Enterprise Research Institute . It recognizes outstanding companies that implement ongoing initiatives that place value on people and contribute to their happiness and well-being.
    Lion received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Award at the 10th annual Most Valuable Company in Japan Grand Prix.

    The Lion Sustainability Report 2019 received the Excellence Award (the Judging Committee Chairman’s Award) in the environmental reporting category of the 23rd Environmental Communication Awards.

Lion Receives the Excellence Award in the 23rd Environmental Communication Awards

The Environmental Communication Awards are an award system aimed at encouraging businesses’ environmental communication initiatives and improving their quality by recognizing outstanding reporting on environmental data and activities.
The Lion Sustainability Report 2019 received the Excellence Award (the Judging Committee Chairman’s Award) in the environmental reporting category of the 23rd Environmental Communication Awards, organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Global Environmental Forum. This particular award is given to reports that demonstrate a certain level of excellence and serve as a model for other companies in the same industry or other companies of similar size.

    CDP Supplier Engagement Rating

    CDP Supplier Engagement Rating

    The CDP is an international NGO based in the United Kingdom that encourages companies to disclose data on their initiatives to combat environmental problems and surveys and evaluates such disclosure. The Supplier Engagement Rating (SER) is based on the CDP climate change questionnaire items about governance, targets, value chain (scope 3) emissions and supplier engagement strategies. As one of the companies that received the highest ratings, Lion was listed on the Supplier Engagement Leaderboard.

    Gr een Logistics Partnership Conference Excellent Green Logistics Commendation Program

    Under this program, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other organizations commend business that have made especially significant contributions to building sustainable logistics systems by, for example, decreasing environmental burden or improving productivity.
    By packing and shipping in-store promotional materials for multiple companies together, we reduce environmental burden and retailers’ labor burden. In recognition of these achievements, we received the Economy, Trade and Industry Minister’s Prize in the Excellent Green Logistics Commendation Program of the Green Logistics Partnership Conference.

    J apan e-Learning Grand Prize and Nihon no Jinjibu HR Award

    The new Lion Career Village system Lion launched in January 2019 to help employees realize self-directed growth received the Career Up Education Special Division 16th Japan e-Learning Grand Prize organized by e-Learning Initiative Japan and Nihon Kogyo Shimbunsha as well as the Nihon no Jinjibu HR Award 2019 from the Nihon no Jinjibu HR Award Organizing Committee.

    This award system, organized by SUSTAINA JAPAN, Inc., recognizes enterprises that proactively engage with environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.
    Lion received the Gold Class award in the overall category of the SUSTAINA ESG AWARDS 2019.

    Kurumin and Platinum Kurumin Certification

    Kurumin and Platinum Kurumin Certification

    Kurumin certification is a system of special certification awarded by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare to companies providing outstanding support for employees raising children, based on the Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Raising Next-Generation Children. Lion received Kurumin certification in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2019, and received Platinum Kurumin certification in 2019.

    Intellectual Property Achievement Awards

    Under this award system , the Japan Patent Office of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry recognizes individuals who have contributed to the development, use and awareness of Japan’s intellectual property rights system as well as corporations that have made proactive use of said system.
    In the fiscal 2019 awards, Lion received the Award for Excellent Corporation Utilizing the Intellectual Property Rights System in the category of trademark exploitation.

    Under this award system, Osaka Prefecture recognizes enterprises that have carried out especially outstanding initiatives to prevent global warming.
    In the Fiscal 2018 Osaka Stop Global Warming Awards, Lion received the Osaka Prefectural Governor’s Award as the business operator that carried out the most outstanding initiatives to prevent global warming.

    K anto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Director-General’s Award for Excellence in Energy Management by a Business Operator

    Under this award system, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry recognizes outstanding individuals and enterprises that have made notable contributions to energy saving in order to promote the further adoption of energy saving measures.
    Lion received the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Director-General’s Award for Excellence in Energy Management by a Business Operator.
